Last Spring, the Michigan House of Representatives passed a bipartisan plan, HB 4714, to expand Michigan’s Medicaid program. The plan was supported by Republican Governor Rick Snyder along with a host of business groups, hospitals, doctors and labor organizations as it provides health care coverage for nearly 500,000 low-income Michigan residents and saves the state over $600 million in the process.
Unfortunately, as is all too common in Lansing today, politics got in the way as the legislation moved over to the Michigan Senate and the Tea Party obstructionists held the bill up for months.
Finally, on August 27, a vote was held in the Senate and the bill passed by the narrowest of margins. Unfortunately, however, extremists in the Republican Party were able to convince enough of their members to use a procedural move that effectively delayed the date that the plan was to go into effect from January 1, 2014 to April 1, 2014, a move that was done solely for political purposes yet, according to the Governor’s own administration, will now cost our state $7 million every single day between January 1 and April 1 due to the program not being up and running.
The grand total of the republicans’ political stunt? $630 million.
Does that sound like good government to you?
